I’ve been working with them since the littlest one was born two years ago (scroll down to “Emmeline’s Birth“). They do everything together as a family and they embody the new word I just made up for the title of this post…”familiness.” It was such a treat to explore their home and see all of the projects the kids had been working on over the year. And as the sun was setting, we went out for a walk in the woods behind their home…oh the weather was perfection and it was obvious that the children are completely comfortable there. Such an enjoyable evening–my hubby even came out to play and take some pics!

Since this little guy could walk, I’m pretty sure that’s how he’s been. He has unending exuberance and energy and he flies through his life in a state of pure joy, living every moment to its fullest. I think we could all take a page out of his little book! Kara…it was wonderful to see you again and I hope you enjoy these images!

See that beautiful woman up there in the purple blouse/grey sweater? Yeah. She and her husband are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year and I think that is definitely something to brag about! To commemorate the occasion and to mark the new engagement of her daughter and future son-in-law, she wanted all of her kids to get together for a long overdue family photo session.
I was the teensiest bit nervous the day of because I’m used to working with little kids and not larger groups of adults. My burp jokes aimed at two-year-olds probably wouldn’t have the same impact on a more mature crowd. However, the minute I arrived, I was instantly at ease: what a fun and down-to-earth group of people! I seriously don’t think I’ve laughed so much at a session…ever. And check out the blue truck–completely restored by her youngest son. Such personality in this family and I’m so glad she decided to capture this on “film” (digitally speaking) forever!

What they are giving their children is priceless: a home full of happiness and unwavering love. It has been a tremendous privilege of mine to photograph their family connections since their daughter was just a baby in mama’s tummy. (You may recognize them here).
Four years since I first met them, they now have three children, and Maria still mothers her family with pure love, grace, and beauty. She sets the mark for me as a mother myself. When we walked out to their garden that night, I didn’t quite comprehend what I was about to witness until I saw the the pictures. Maria pulled out her face painting supplies (she mentioned that was one of the things they loved to do together) and set to work on creating artwork on each of her children. It was such a beautiful scene–and at the risk of sounding like an artsy goob, I teared up when I got a chance to flip through the images from that night. But really, I have to wonder if she has *any* idea the kind of memories she’s creating for her children every time she does things like this for them. She exudes devotion as a mother and as a wife. She is my shining example of everything a mommy should be. I am honored to know her and proud to call her a friend.

Okay, well once I got over the fact that the little guy greeted me with, “Are you coming to clean the house today?” *then* I had fun. But my gosh, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed and played so much in one session!!! Of course, part of the deal was that I had to let the kids snap a few pics:

Not bad work, huh?

See, I told you we had FUN!!!

We seriously could not have more going on the day we did this newborn session. Walls freshly painted, furniture on order, repairmen to fix a broken window, etc., etc. Every time we’d get big sis geared up to play and baby sis comfy and cozy, someone new would ring the doorbell. At one point, the repairmen were stepping ever so gingerly with their big ol’ steel toed boots around a little bundle of sleeping newborn in the doorway. So we just went with it and it turned out just fine. These girls are so beautiful and I just know they are going to be such good friends as they grow older!

Sometimes, you can strip away all of the color and hip, Austin backgrounds and wind up with something so simple, yet so beautiful. A little green oasis tucked away in Austin with a warm, glowing sunrise made for the perfect playground for this family photo session. They looked beautiful!

about it being 100+ degrees outside:
it makes for super, happy, relaxed little newborn babies. Isn’t she adorable? And I couldn’t get over that perfect little pout!!!Aug 15, 2011
Her big bro was a little firecracker. They balance each other out 😉

I’ve really been enjoying lifestyle newborn sessions like this. It’s not about the latest prop or the coolest blanket or headband. It’s about a family just being a family and pulling in elements of their current circumstances into the images so they can always remember these early, fleeting days.
