We were barely able to squeeze in this maternity photo session in the GORGEOUS Texas bluebonnets before their precious baby made his way into this world. And, we happened to hit this field right at peak season with perfect temps and a perfect sunset to go along with it. Another FAV HERE. I hope that every year when the wildflowers come out, they’ll remember this time of anticipation and excitement over the miracle that was about to grace their lives ;-).

Speaking of whom, would you like to meet him?

Yes…he is *really* cute and I very much look forward to getting my hands on him again soon to properly appreciate his squishiness ;-).

As part of a very special project I’m working on, I was fortunate enough to be present the very moment he entered this world! This entire family is very dear to me and I cannot think of anything more wonderful than to actually get to document his (very fast) Birth Day.

And then, a few days later, we all got together again, this time during daylight hours to photograph their new family of FIVE!

Attention Disney Channel scouts: if you are looking for your next star, this little guy is your man right up there. He was cracking me up with all of his camera-poses!

Was trying to take pics of dad and his youngest boy, but oldest boy (AKA Mr. Disney Channel) couldn’t resist coming over and showing some love. I didn’t mind at all ;-).

And oh, the sister of the family. Little does she know how her little can-do spirit amazes and inspires us. She has been through soooooo much and yet she is completely unfazed and marches around like the princess she most certainly is.

And this little prince. He has quite the namesake to fulfill and he is so very loved and adored by his entire family.

Interesting tidbit: we used this basket during his older sister’s newborn photo session.

And this blanket was used in his big brother’s newborn session!

His little crown. So perfect for him.

And I totally emotionally lost it when she insisted that she place the crown on Mommy’s head. Yes, honey. Your Mommy absolutely deserves to wear a crown.

He was made for this family. He fits in so magnificently (favorite image HERE). His arrival couldn’t have been at a more necessary time. He is needed. He is adored. He is perfect, Prince Jun.

…”It’s a GIRL!” and everyone–and I mean everyone–in the room felt their joy! Major congrats to you guys…little girl, your mama is pretty amazing!

Sarah’s patience in the days leading up to the much anticipated birth of her second daughter floored me. I can’t say I’ve ever been the most patient person in the world…especially when it comes to expecting a baby, but each time I would speak with Sarah as the days ticked by past her due date, she sounded so calm, so “let it be,” exactly how a mommy should be–the baby will get here when she gets here…no need to rush it.

Sarah called me at about 5 p.m. and I have to giggle remember what she said, “Yeah, I think my water broke!” I could definitely hear the excitement in her voice this time and it was contagious! I have to admit I was a little hesitant to accept this birth session because it was in Ft. Hood and I was extremely nervous about missing the birth due to the drive. Sarah was very convincing early on ;-), but I was still ready to bounce out the door after that phone call. But I waited. And I waited. And I waited. When should I leave????

Finally, I got another call letting me know that progress was being made and so I ventured out into the dark headed toward Ft. Hood.

Sarah was handling the contractions so well when I got there (I guess it was around 10 or 11 p.m. at this point). We all hung out in her room together, chatting and giggling and watching the Olympics. I was so incredibly relieved that I made it there in time and the guards actually gave me clearance to get on base, LOL. At around 2 a.m., things were still moving along, but everyone decided to try to catch a couple hours of sleep before the real “go time.” I have never done this before, but all of us–Sarah, her hubby, her mom, and myself–all curled up in the hospital room right then and there and dozed off to the soothing sound of baby girl’s heartbeat. I did  have to snap a few pictures before we drifted off because it was SOOOOOOOOO beautiful and peaceful…that time before your whole world changes and it’s those last few hours of knowing that baby is still inside you. I don’t know how any of us slept, but somehow we did and when the lights came on in the room at 4 a.m., we were all pretty rested and ready to meet this little girl.

She was SO alert! Look at her looking at her daddy!!!

And then it was time for the sisters to meet…

I will admit I was pretty tired driving home that morning from Killeen, but I was also completely elated over witnessing the first few moments together of this little family. The sunrise that morning was glorious. I was going to keep driving by, but I forced myself to pull over and take a few pics…this was the sunrise on the morning she was born. No one will ever be just like her and the sunrise will never look just like this again.

Sarah…thank you much for letting me be there to document V’s birth for you. You are one incredible mommy and I’m so happy that you and your girls are finally together!

…the birth of a beautiful baby girl was marked by an almost-equally-as-beautiful sunrise. Congratulations to the four of you! Couldn’t have planned a better way to spend last night than watching this little girl make her much anticipated debut. [Another one HERE and HERE.]

He was speedy. He was substantial. He was adorable! Congrats to his mama for being a birth champ today!

Ever notice how some things can fall off of your radar for a while and then all of a sudden, it’s everywhere you go…like when you start loving chevron print and can’t find it anywhere and then one day, Pinterest and Target are exploding with it ;-). That’s how I’m feeling about birth photography lately.
I haven’t photographed any births in the past few months because of workshops and my travel schedule, but all of a sudden, BAM! I’m all things birth photography. I’m currently on call for a new baby to be born any minute now (I’m sure his mom wishes it was any minute now ;-). I also had an interesting phone call with a lady up north today about the rise of birth photography in the US (more on that in another post;-). During that chat, I talked about one of my most memorable birth sessions…who happens to be the older brother of a birth from earlier this year that I had not yet blogged. Thought I’d take advantage of this time to go ahead and check that off my ever expanding “to be blogged” list.
Let’s start at the beginning for this little guy. This was to be a scheduled c-section and mom said she was determined to show up in heels for his arrival (go mom!). But, a few days before the anticipated date, I got a phone call at 2 a.m., “My water just broke!” She was so incredibly calm, “Yes, I think I’ll take a shower and then we’ll head over to the hospital in a little while.” I was bouncing up and down with excitement and here she was talking like she was heading to the grocery store. She was just like this when her first child was born…she cracks me up–nerves of steel. So, taking a cue from her, I calmed myself down, took my time, and moseyed on down to the hospital some time later.
When I got there, however, everything was moving at warp speed. That had her all checked in and prepped for the OR. Turns out her labor had kicked it into high gear and they were ready to roll. On go the bunny suits and away we go!
ws-austin-csection-cesarian-birth-photographer.jpg
It startles me just a bit how quickly c-sections go–fascinating process! Usually, it’s only just a few minutes from the time mom is taken into the OR to when we get to hear the sweet cries of a brand new baby…
ws-austin-csection-birth-photography.jpg
While mommy was in recovery, I tagged along with dad to capture the first few moments of their new baby boy.

A few hours later, it was finally time for this new family of four to be united. Big brother’s reaction to his new little brother was enough to make your heart melt!
ws-austin-newborn-birth-baby-maternity-photographer-c.jpg
What a fun day that 2 a.m. phone call turned out to bring! And, I just got word that I’m going to be seeing this little guy again really soon for his 4 month pictures. I cannot wait to see how he’s changed!
austin-hospital-birth-photography.jpg
I promise you, there was not a dry eye in the house when her father held a prayer for the new parents-to-be and the unborn baby shortly before his arrival. It was one of the most memorable birth moments I’ve witnessed. When you become a parent for the first time yourself, there’s no feeling like it in the world. To get to be a spectator and watch a loving couple go through all of those emotions just before, during, and immediately after they are initiated into parenthood…well, there’s also no feeling quite like it in the world. It is an honor I do not take for granted.

I love when a song becomes the soundtrack to a session. A good friend/client of mine sent me the link to this song “You Were Born” one day, shortly before this little guy was born and I knew *right* away, it was going to be in his birth slideshow. So, I sent Cloud Cult a note and much to my surprise, they granted their permission for me to use this song! I couldn’t be more grateful that it got to accompany such a beautiful, beautiful day for his mommy and daddy. [Google Reader users, you can watch the show HERE].

I’ve had a number of people inquire about birth photography sessions for this summer and fall (what’s with this baby boom?) but let me warn you, I can only take a couple of sessions, so if this is something that you’ve decided you wanted to do, NOW is the time to book.
Thank you again to this beautiful family for having me be part of one of the best days of their lives and I very much look forward to seeing what the future holds in store for this little guy!

…is still just as sweet.
Let me just tell you that I’m glad I decided to go to bed at 11 last night instead of staying up to proof pics because that 2 a.m. call this morning wasn’t quite in my plans, LOL. This little man surprised us all just a bit as we were planning to meet him on Monday. It was absolutely incredible to get to be there with this family again (I was there the day their first son was born) and wow, were we all impressed with how big brother *immediately* took to his new sidekick. It was beautiful!
Speaking of beautiful…
birth.jpg
….I know. I know. I should just make this the fashion!
It was an exhausting (I haven’t pulled a double header in a long time 😉 but ULTRA JOYOUS day! Gosh, I had to pinch myself periodically–is this really my life…my job??? I absolutely adore this family and it was such an honor to get to document his birth. Congratulations again, you guys (guess I’ll find out his name at his newborn session, LOL?). You make beautiful babies!
