I think we all know I’m a big fan of color in photographs, but I always provide a black and white version of each image to my clients on their image CD just in case. When I processed the black and whites from this wonderful newborn session, I really loved the feel of them. The candid, real-life moments captured seemed to shine through even more when the color was removed. So, I thought I do something I’ve never done before in all my six years as a photographer: blog a session in black and white only.
Ooops. Wait. Scratch that. Just found a set of images that *has* to be color:
Oh well. Maybe someday I’ll try that again.
I love it when we get opportunities like this to do a session in home…to really experience the environment where they brought their first baby home from the hospital after she was born. We also got to go to the nearby park where mom said they used to go before she was even pregnant…and when she was pregnant, they would take long walks and dream about the day they would hold her in their arms. What a gem to have this place frozen in time with these images!

This little cutie pie was so petite, so striking that I swear she didn’t even look real sometimes. She has such a powerful little personality in that tiny body and she will melt your heart when she waves to you. Mom and dad, I’m seriously concerned for you all in about 15 years ;-).

Today….
When I realized a few days ago that I wanted to recreate this image for this wonderful mommy, I never believed that it might actually happen. The chances of getting a newborn perfectly posed + his toddler brother to even want to be in the same room + mom actually still having that beautiful skirt were pretty slim. But it worked. First try. It was a gooooooood day. I’m still in shock ;-).

Since we’ve already started getting into the 90’s around here in these parts, we naturally assumed that a sunrise session would be the perfect temperature and not too hot. Silly us. I think it had just barely reached 50 this particular morning and bless his heart, it was all we could do to keep him warm. We would take a few pictures, mom would wrap him in his blanket, he’d warm up, we’d take a couple more, rinse and repeat. He was such a trooper and every now and then, he would treat us all once again to his infectious smile.

Three years ago I was charmed by big sister. At the time, she was one of the most well-spoken, pleasant, intelligent 1-year-olds I had *ever* met. She is still one of the most well-spoken, pleasant, intelligent children I’ve ever worked with. She has a GREAT imagination and loves to entertain. I’m glad I get to say, “I knew her when…”
Enter little sister. Just as joyful, a little timid at first, but you can see it didn’t take her long to warm up to the idea of exploring this amazing Austin park at sunrise. The fog that day was mystical and although we battled slight drizzle, no one seemed to mind. We were just there to play and celebrate what it’s like to be a happy family of four.
They can go from this:
To this:
I LOVE how she’s like an exact copy of herself, just a little more alert and a little more filled out! Never ceases to amaze me! She was our 2nd in-home model for the last workshop and oh boy, did we have a blast with her. I don’t know how her parents can get anything done with her around…I’d be too busy pinching her cheeks and working for that adorable little smile.
No really. This has to be one of my most memorable lifestyle family photo sessions from last holiday season and I can’t believe I haven’t shared it yet. Why is it memorable? Because to me, it fully embodies lifestyle family photography with the perfect balance of getting those great smiling images and then those little moments in between. I find that it’s often those little moments that have the greatest impact when viewing the pictures years down the road. Look at the way mom is looking at her baby in the last image…my word, can you feel the intensity of her love?
Rumor has it that I get to work with little sister again for an upcoming commercial shoot for Baby Bugaloo and Gro Boutique! Can’t wait to see how much she has grown!!!!
I mentioned when I posted their little preview on Facebook that I was hesitant to actually even share a certain image. Why? Because that kind of thing just doesn’t happen. It doesn’t. It’s like the Holy Grail of the newborn photography world. And I don’t want everyone to think that I’m magical or something and I can make that happen. I try. Believe me, I try. But this was just pure love and adoration.
While we’re on the topic of session magic and Holy Grails, baby girl may have been the most smiley newborn ever:
Or maybe they’re more like smirks. Either way, I wish I knew what joke she was in on that we were not aware of at the time.
You *might* recognize this family from a few years ago. Big sister wasn’t always so big, but she certainly had the most captivating eyes…even back when. She reminds me of the Afghan girl…she’s got the kind of eyes that you will never forget. Even if I saw her on the street 10 years from now, I would 100% be able to know exactly who she was. Lucky, lucky girl.

When he came to visit a few months ago, his mommy brought along a fun little surprise: her entire collection of albums we created to represent his first year of life…
Wow! It was really cool to see them all together like that. Our year’s worth of work had come to fruition. And now they can look back on it any time they want. Awesome!
