USB-2-WEB

USB Memory Direct! Sorry…just had to share because I tend to get excited when I find things that are exactly the right shade of pink ;-). I’m even more excited about the ones I’ll be ordering next year to commemorate Pinkle Toes Photography’s 10th Birthday (wow…can you even believe that?). Thanks so much for the wonderful and speedy customer service, USB Memory Direct!

I got something in the mail yesterday. It was the culmination of 365 days (+ a few more this year) of documentation, sweat, and tears. Literally. I was shaking a little bit as I opened it and flipped through all 242 pages of it. When I finished, I will admit to being a little tired. It was difficult to relive last year through these pictures, but at the same time, it was necessary and I was surprised to find that I was smiling more than I was teary. I will be ordering three more copies…one more for each of my children to keep forever as well. I am glad it’s over. But I am proud:

For the next 48 hrs, the THIS link will allow you the chance to flip through the entire album via iBooks on an iPad (for those that were asking to see the inside). Note that April 27th and May 2nd are not misprints. Those are very intentional and were the most appropriate ways I could think of to attempt to convey our feelings at that time. Once that link expires, you can always see all of the images in the collection via this Facebook album.

The book is 11×13 from Blurb designed using InDesign (which I learned via these album design tutorials). My husband hung up the shelves for me last night (I love him) so that our albums could be displayed and more readily accessible to everyone to flip through whenever we want. Though I would have preferred the shelves to be white and probably could have made them myself MUCH cheaper, I was in a hurry to take advantage of my husband’s willing spirit, so we snagged these from Target. The lip on the end is *very* important as they hold the books on the shelf and keep them from sliding off. They could also be a little bit deeper to hold more, but in this particular space, they work well and don’t get in the way of the walkway, so I guess that’s good.

Thank you to everyone that followed along with this project last year and I would LOVE to see anyone else’s 365’s if they are willing to share. Post in the comments below! And if you started one this year…GOOD LUCK!

P.S. My husband asked me two questions after looking through this book:

Him – “Are you glad you did it?”

Me – “Heck YES!”

Him – “Do you want to do it again?”

Me – “Heck NO!”

Every single day, I get asked, “How’s Jim?”

I am floored that people think to ask, considering most everyone in this world is facing their own issues and sadness and challenges.

And yet people care enough to ask.

I am humbled.

But I am sad because I don’t know how to even begin to answer that question, but let’s sum it up like this: he’s still with us and he’s still fighting.

Quite literally the day after we got the horrible news on my husband’s brother, we drove up to be with Jim and his family. I brought my camera with me. We decided to take some pictures. It was the hardest session ever. To be honest, even though we are so blessed to still get to see and talk to Jim, it’s still very hard for me personally to look at these pictures. But, I want to share some with you because you should meet Jim and his family. They are good people. And this is a reminder to you and to myself of what Jim is fighting for…of what is worth fighting for:

It has been an uphill roller coaster since November. We can’t ever really enjoy any downhill thrill. We can’t ever really take a relaxing breath. We just keep creeping up a hill that gets bigger and bigger. We were told the day after Christmas that we might have 3-4 weeks with him. We’ve passed that 4 week mark. But how strangely joyous and sad is it that we are grateful for just a week, just a day when at age 35, you’re expecting to grow old and have grandchildren and maybe even one day, great-grandchildren? Jim’s not technically my brother and it’s not my husband and children who are facing this exhausting battle, but we are all feeling it. We all hurt. We are all scared. We are all hoping.

Jim is trying. He really is. I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to try to eat and eat well when the cancer in your liver is making you nauseous all the time. We went back to spend a few days with them a week or so ago. To see these pictures now, it is gut-wrenching to realize the toll the cancer has taken on Jim’s body in mere weeks. I am glad we took those pictures when we did.

In lieu of the standard chemotherapy treatments, Jim has opted for zelboraf (http://www.skincancer.org/news/melanoma/new-zelboraf-study), a newly approved drug to treat advanced melanoma. He’s also completed a series of targeted radiation treatments. In about another month, Jim will get new body scans and tests to determine the effectiveness of his treatments.

And so he fights. And he waits. And we wait.

The hardest part is that after all of this waiting, Jim’s sick leave has finally run out. It is incredibly ironic that they sacrificed so much for so long so that Jim could go to school and get a good job and take care of the family while his wife stayed home to care for their children. And now she needs to work. AND care for the children. AND care for her husband. AND do everything around the house. AND worry. AND plan for the future. AND maintain hope. I think my heart aches the most for her in all of this.

When we launched j.imprints back before Christmas, it was a quick effort to provide some sort of financial relief to Jim and his family while he underwent treatment. The response was overwhelming. Absolutely overwhelming and I can’t comprehend the kindness and concern and support that my clients, friends, family, and even complete strangers have shown to our family through j.imprints. It was tough for Jim’s wife to accept this kind of help, but I also know it has become a nice little safety net…a just in case…a “my kiddos aren’t going to go hungry” kind of relief to her. In addition to that, you managed to help us donate nearly $1000 to the Melanoma Research Alliance! Wow! Thank you!

We want to keep this effort going and so long story short, we have created a limited edition Valentine-themed release of images. PLUS we’ve added iPhone cases and notecards to the lineup. Please take a few minutes to browse j.imprints. Please, see if there’s something there that appeals to you. Please PASS on the link! Share it on Facebook, tweet it, blog it, e-mail it. Since Instagram was pretty much the inspiration behind this project, share images of your j.imprints on Instagram and tag them #jimprints (have you searched the #jimprints tag on Instagram? Oh, I love seeing everyone’s images displayed so beautifully). And again, because I promise I will mention this every time I talk about it on here, get educated on melanoma.

Thank you all again for everything. Every message of encouragement. Every little gift. Every story shared. Your power to uplift is immeasurable.

When he came to visit a few months ago, his mommy brought along a fun little surprise: her entire collection of albums we created to represent his first year of life…

Wow! It was really cool to see them all together like that. Our year’s worth of work had come to fruition. And now they can look back on it any time they want. Awesome!

holiday_austin-family-childrens-photographer.jpg

I have completely enjoyed my little break so far, hanging out with my kiddos and doing all of these holiday-like things with them each day (in spite of being sick). It has been so nice to get offline and off the computer and out of packing tape to play board games, watch movies, look at Christmas lights, snuggle, laugh, bake sweets, and soak up every thing I missed while I was caught up in the holiday photography whirlwind.
Pinkle Toes Photography will continue to be closed until January 9th (well, still got some sessions and still have workshops coming up), but please be patient as e-mails, facebook messages, and phone calls will likely not be returned until after the 9th.
Clients…I will be sending you the details of the 2011 Pinkle’s Pic of the Year contest. Changing things up this year to make it more exciting and the prize is even bigger! Be on the lookout in your e-mail next week and if you don’t get something by the 1st, let me know!!!!
I will try to catch up on the blog sometime next year (ha!) to share all of the incredible holiday family sessions and beautiful cards from this year. I have so enjoyed getting all of your cards in the mail!!! Gosh, there are a lot of beautiful happy families out there and that make my heart happy. Meanwhile, if you didn’t get a copy yet, here’s a peek at our holiday card this year:

I hope you ALL have a WONDERFUL holiday season and are spending lots and lots of time with the ones you love, enjoying old traditions and creating new memories.
Much love,
Michele

h9-austin-lifestyle-family-baby-photography.jpg

9 to 11 months is THE best age to photograph! I love it because they’re still very baby-like, but they have SO much personality (and they can’t run away from me…yet). If I had it to do all over, I would have done a family session with each of my little ones at this exact age. But alas, I don’t, so I’ll happily live vicariously through my clients ;-).
[Kinda bummed…I just realized I never took pictures of this album 🙁 Boo. This was number 4 in the series and it looked super cool. Oh well, I’ll just have to be better about it when his 1 year album comes in.]

Even though I’d spent hours going through the images and designing the album, my heart fluttered with both sadness and joy as I flipped through the pages when it arrived on my doorstep. The album features the maternity pictures, his beautiful birth day photos, and his perfect little newborn session (below). While it was incredibly rewarding to see it all tied together like that, it also meant that that particular “trilogy” was over.  I’ve mentioned before that this beautiful family is leaving Austin soon and I don’t know why, but it really hits me hard when I think about it. I’ve been working with them since before the birth of their first baby a few years ago. Feels like I’m going to be saying goodbye to good friends. *Fortunately,* I get one last fix this fall before they’re off to make a new life up north. And equally fortunate, we can stay in touch via Facebook.

Okay. I’m done moping now. Here are a few photos from his newborn session…

frames_austin-family-photographer.jpg

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the time when I could show these off and now, here we go! I’m so excited to offer these hand-finished beautiful wood frames to my clients in 16 styles, available in 50+ colors. You MUST see them in person…they are divine! I love the idea of mixing matching the various styles and colors to create wall collages, too, and I’d be thrilled to help you design something for a specific space using the images from your sessions with me.

Speaking of sessions, did you know I only have five openings left for holiday sessions right now? And, they are all in September. October and November are booked solid. If you have been in contact with me about securing a family holiday session but haven’t actually reserved the session yet, I strongly encourage you to do so now.

Can’t wait to see what kind of beautiful wall creations we come up with using these new Signature Frames!

I have a true admiration for his mommy’s vision for documenting his first year of life: newborn, 3 months, this 6 month session (more pics below), and I’m proofing his 9 month session as we speak. We have carefully documented each of these incredible leaps every three months–each session very different from the next–and then we put together a beautiful Heirloom Album for each session. I literally gasped when I went back for his 9 month session a few weeks ago and saw the collection of these albums proudly displayed in the living room.

It.Looks.So.AMAZING.

And I just cannot wait to see all five of them together after we celebrate his 1st Birthday. Can you imagine how much fun it’s going to be for their family to sit down together and flip through these albums over the years? I’m jealous. I wish I had the foresight to make something like this for each of my babies.

So, before I go back to his 9 month pics, I’ll leave you with some more from his 6 month session:

(You’ll see why at the end of the slides ;-). Wow. Have I really not shared his newborn session yet?? Oh, this little man is such a blessing to his family and you won’t even believe it when you see the rest of his 3 months session!

Not to mention how much I ooohed and ahhhhed when this beauty landed on my doorstep (I may or may not have petted it repeatedly before sending it to its owner):
