Since this little guy could walk, I’m pretty sure that’s how he’s been. He has unending exuberance and energy and he flies through his life in a state of pure joy, living every moment to its fullest. I think we could all take a page out of his little book! Kara…it was wonderful to see you again and I hope you enjoy these images!

See that beautiful woman up there in the purple blouse/grey sweater? Yeah. She and her husband are celebrating 30 years of marriage this year and I think that is definitely something to brag about! To commemorate the occasion and to mark the new engagement of her daughter and future son-in-law, she wanted all of her kids to get together for a long overdue family photo session.
I was the teensiest bit nervous the day of because I’m used to working with little kids and not larger groups of adults. My burp jokes aimed at two-year-olds probably wouldn’t have the same impact on a more mature crowd. However, the minute I arrived, I was instantly at ease: what a fun and down-to-earth group of people! I seriously don’t think I’ve laughed so much at a session…ever. And check out the blue truck–completely restored by her youngest son. Such personality in this family and I’m so glad she decided to capture this on “film” (digitally speaking) forever!

…catches the most incredible light EVER!!! People cringe whenever I suggest a sunrise session, but oh, it’s so worth it. All of these images (with the exception of the two black and whites) are straight out of the camera…that’s how good the light was to us.
It has been such a pleasure getting to know this beautiful couple and I’m thrilled to photograph the birth of their sweet baby in just a few short weeks.

I know every parent hopes that their children will be the best of friends when they are little and when they grow up. Sometimes, it takes a little while for those positive sibling relationships to develop (as in the case of my two boys, LOL), but every now and then some parents are very lucky to observe a sibling bond that forms instantly (as in the case of these two sisters). I hope they treasure their closeness because it is quite a beautiful and rare thing to see so early.
Oh, just realized I hadn’t blogged the images from their maternity session yet either. It was sooooooo windy that day, but they stuck it out anyway. Well worth it!!

When I was at their home for her newborn session last fall (remember the canoe?), it was under major construction (her mommy is an amazing architect). So it was wonderful that they opened their home to our workshop group this spring and let us see the progress. It was BEAUTIFUL and she did an incredible job of utilizing the space. Love, love, love what they did for the master bedroom and kinda wish I had taken more pics for her to show it off.
But of course, we weren’t really there to photograph a bedroom. We were there because of this blue-eyed angel. She was all smiles and giggles for us and am very much looking forward to seeing her again next week to celebrate the big “oh ONE!”—canoe, and all.

Wow. Was this *really* all the way back in March??? He was such a perfect angel for our newborn workshop demonstration and let me tell you, his poor dad (who was suffering through some kind of cold) was quite the trooper. These tender moments of mom and dad cuddled up with a brand new baby are what keep me going. You just don’t get these memories back and when you’re in the middle of trying to figure out your new role as a parent (a sleep-deprived parent at that), you can quickly forget what it was like when they were *this* brand new.
Looking forward to demonstrating this kind of newborn photography for the 2012 workshop attendees (we have some openings left), but with a little twist…this time, we’re going into homes for the newborn part. I’m excited. I love exploring my client’s environments!

Why, yes, my jaw hit the floor when mama showed me her incredible dress she had chosen for her session. Wow. And she pulls it off so perfectly. Sigh. What a treat to see this happy and loving family again after their newborn session last fall.
To say I’m behind on blogging would be a bit of an understatement, but in light of announcing the 2012 Professional Family and Child Photographer workshops, I figured I should catch up a little on the workshop family sessions ;-). My middle child came running into my office yesterday–dirty, sweaty, out of breath, and talking a mile a minute. The house had been awfully quiet and I figured my husband and the boys were up to something outside, but I didn’t have a clue as to what he was talking about. Then I went out and saw they were digging in a little space in our front yard. Instantly, I realized exactly what they had found.
10 years go, my husband and I buried a time capsule for our future children. We’d been married just a year and hadn’t even started to think about having kiddos at that point, but we had this crazy idea to make a time capsule and decided to go for it. I specifically remember we wrote letters to our future children (we thought we were only going to have two and we already had their names picked out…Tristan and Amerlyn. Thank goodness she came along to fulfill our prophecy). Over the years, I’ve thought about when we might dig up the time capsule with the kids. To be honest, I couldn’t really remember what else we had put in there, but I was *really* excited to read what we had written to our future kids.
When they first started digging, the boys had no idea that *we* were to ones who buried it. They were so wrapped up in the excitement of finding treasure…they were convinced it was at least 100 years old, LOL. I was crushed, however, when I saw that the bag protecting it had fallen apart and the tin was severely corroded. Everything that was paper inside the tin (including several photos, my copy of this book–which was a HUGE part of my life–newspapers, magazines, and oh no!!! THOSE LETTERS!!!!) was ruined. I may or may not have cried a little bit over that.
However, some things did survive…
That’s a Polaroid of my hubby and I when I was in college and there’s my genie watch (I was obsessed w/ all things Disney growing up) and somehow, a little miniature plastic Hungry Hippos game survived, too. There was a bunch of old jewelry (almost all of it was corroded beyond recognition), but the greatest find was our high school class rings!! I totally forgot that we had put them in there and I have spent countless hours searching the house for them over the years, LOL. That almost makes up for the lost letters ;-). They say diamonds are forever, but now I’m thinking it’s plastic, Polaroids, and gold.
The boys enjoyed the time capsule much more than we ever would have imagined. We’ve decided to make another one for our family to dig up in another 10 years. I’m excited to see what they choose to put in there and I *hope* we can come up with a water-tight container that won’t fall apart on us–any suggestions…something besides gold?
