All three kids are finally the perfect ages now. They get the idea of Halloween…we don’t have to carry anyone while Trick-or-Treating…they’re not too old/cool…they still have that sense of wonder and magic about the whole thing. And even better, my mom and sis live in the same town so we can stop by for a surprise visit. Love, love, love it!!!

Pumpkins were carved.

Seeds roasted in the oven.
The smell of pumpkin soup filled the house.
A fall breeze flowed through the open windows while the kids watched Hocus Pocus.
Tonight we’ll read Goodnight Goon again.

I.love.fall.

As I was sifting through my archives the other day, I found myself getting lost looking through past sessions. I thought it might be kind of fun to bring back a few blasts from the past every now and then:

I sometimes wonder what I sacrifice in exchange for improving technique. At the time of this session, I think I was about a year in and had only photographed a few newborns. I wasn’t as technically proficient as I would like to have been and maybe just a teensy bit heavy on the photoshop. But I felt like I had a vision…like I did see things from my own unique perspective. Do I still do that or am I too focused on trying to get something technically perfect these days?
What do I remember about this session? Hmmmm…I remember I was captivated by how handsome these two brothers were. The toddler was very charming and actually quite well behaved for his age. I remember I loved the layout of their house, but I was too afraid to photograph much indoors ;-). Their mommy was stunning, but she didn’t want to be in the pics and I was soooo bummed. We had fun flipping through her wedding album after the session. And little man’s slack lip when he fell asleep just made my heart leap.

It’s so shocking to me to see babies when they’re newborns and then at one year. I can always recognize their features, but am constantly blown away by how much they’ve changed, too. The best part is finally getting to see some personality emerge. I know it is a precious journey for the parents, but for a photographer, it can be a truly unique perspective. Gosh she was lovely and the setting of their home + the weather + the light that morning could not have been more glorious!

I’ve grown really close to this little lady and her mama. From the first time we ever spoke on the phone (more than 3 years ago and I was *very* pregnant w/ baby number 3), her mom and I just clicked. We get excited over the same things and I love that we can just start chatting and one idea leads to the next until we’ve created a totally unique theme for each one of her little girl’s birthday sessions. I love that I can say, “I wonder if we could…” and she finds some way to make it happen. I love to watch the two of them together because they are as close as I hope my own daughter and I are. I love the thought that I could one day be taking pictures when she turns 10…or even sweet sixteen. It feels amazing to be part of a tradition like this and I treasure that honor.

9 to 11 months is THE best age to photograph! I love it because they’re still very baby-like, but they have SO much personality (and they can’t run away from me…yet). If I had it to do all over, I would have done a family session with each of my little ones at this exact age. But alas, I don’t, so I’ll happily live vicariously through my clients ;-).
[Kinda bummed…I just realized I never took pictures of this album 🙁 Boo. This was number 4 in the series and it looked super cool. Oh well, I’ll just have to be better about it when his 1 year album comes in.]

and say that this baby boy was as CUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE as he could be! He was bright-eyed and in that awesome “quiet alert” period during the first part of his photo session and then he just drifted off into a gentle sleep for the rest. (Pinch me, I’m dreaming. Loved his mommy’s sense of style and as always, it was an honor to get to watch these parents dote over their new baby and see how much joy he has brought them.

What does one do when you’re in the middle of a severe drought, but you want to capture the vibe of a season? Why, you play in the leaves of the dead tress of course! This is one of my most favorite locations to use for sessions, but I was heartbroken when I pulled up and saw the damage the drought had done :-(. The only greenery in the whole place was a small patch next to the water of the very low creek.
But it’s okay. We managed to have fun laughing at ourselves playing in the dead tree leaves. She has the most unique look, doesn’t she? A beautiful, confident young lady and I was thrilled to finally get to work with her myself–she was actually a model for one of my photography workshops this past year and I was so pleased with the images the attendees captured of her then. Her baby sister even got to join us for a few shots (LOVE their feathers, too!).
I am taking bookings NOW for graduating seniors in Austin, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Marble Falls, Westlake, Round Rock, and surrounding areas. This is definitely the time to schedule your session–I know lots of people wait until the spring, but I promise you, those openings fill up very quickly. December is actually a GREAT time to get your senior pictures taken while you’re on break and then, you can check one more thing off your To Do list ;-). You’re welcome.

I’ve been working with them since the littlest one was born two years ago (scroll down to “Emmeline’s Birth“). They do everything together as a family and they embody the new word I just made up for the title of this post…”familiness.” It was such a treat to explore their home and see all of the projects the kids had been working on over the year. And as the sun was setting, we went out for a walk in the woods behind their home…oh the weather was perfection and it was obvious that the children are completely comfortable there. Such an enjoyable evening–my hubby even came out to play and take some pics!
