As if it was the “yang” to this “yin,” we celebrated his 1 year birthday by seeing just how much color we could find in downtown Austin. We truly did not have to go far–that’s just one of the many, many things I love about this city…it is so rich with vibrant color and texture! He was so expressive and that boy TORE into his cupcake. Lucky for us, there was a hose nearby where we could clean up our mess. Probably one of my favorite parts of the session was watching mom and dad work together on that task as a team.

Sometimes, you can strip away all of the color and hip, Austin backgrounds and wind up with something so simple, yet so beautiful. A little green oasis tucked away in Austin with a warm, glowing sunrise made for the perfect playground for this family photo session. They looked beautiful!

What’s to say on this subject that hasn’t already been said? Instead of dwelling on how sad and tragic this day was (honestly, I’m not sure I ever want to relive that kind of depression again), I try really hard to focus on the incredible spirit and love that arose from the depths of this country to help each other get through that dark time. I’m proud to say I see it happening again as people are coming together to help the victims of the recent fires. Thank you to anyone and everyone who has ever answered the call to protect this country and the people in it–no matter what the cost. Just thank you.

I may or may not of squealed in delight when his mama said she wanted his 1 year session to be Mad Men inspired (p.s. have you all seen the new Mad Men collection at Banana Republic? Brilliant marketing, there!) It was a dream, really, and we found the neatest little places around town in which to shoot…Bev gets major bonus points for having the courage to march right in and ask! Hard to believe it was more than a year ago when Miles got to go home for the first time…
Incredible kid and incredible family.

My son and I drove out near Bastrop the other night. Saw the entire horizon glowing a sickening red. I know it’s been a tough time for everyone affected by these fires and the rebuilding is going to be even tougher. Hearing stories about firefighters working day and night to provide some relief–even after some of them have lost their homes, even though many of them are volunteers–makes my heart burst with pride for them. If you haven’t already, it’s so easy to donate to the relief effort online–less than 1 minute of your time.
My thoughts continue to be with those who have lost.

They had *just* moved into their new home…in the midst of all that, their little guy surprised them quite early. Mom was worried because the house wasn’t furnished or decorated yet. I was elated to have this blank canvas with which to work. And he was a sweet little superstar at his debut photo session!
